Perth Airport has begun works on a major expansion and upgrade of Terminal 2, which handles domestic flights from airlines including Jetstar, Virgin Australia, and Rex.

The Terminal 2 upgrades will include expanded passenger screening facilities and departure lounges, new self-service check-in facilities, and a larger baggage make-up hall, with design works also underway to expand the southern passenger walkway.

“These works are critical to support our growing regional passenger base as it will almost double the passenger capacity within Terminal 2,” said Perth Airport CEO Jason Waters.

“We’ve seen significant growth of regional passenger numbers, with an increase of 3.7 per cent on last year seeing numbers grow from 6 million to 6.24 million.

“This growth is positive for the Western Australian economy and the resource and regional tourism sector and showcases the importance of Perth as an aviation hub.

“This expansion is more than just additional space – it’s about enhancing the customer experience and delivering our airline partners the capacity and efficiencies they need to grow their businesses.”

Waters said “significant construction works” will be underway in the terminal, which may inconvenience passengers.

“We will be working with our partner contractor Hoskins on complex staging and logistics to ensuring minimal disruption throughout construction,” he said.

“As part of a major Capital Project works program to enhance the passenger experience at Perth Airport, we are also building new carparks, roads, and upgrades to our retail and food and beverage offering – all within a live operating environment.

“Extensive planning work is being done on the sequencing and delivery of these major projects to help minimise this unavoidable inconvenience.”

The beginning of works comes after Perth Airport this month released the Preliminary Draft Major Development Plan for its new terminal project, which is now open to public comment.

The project, part of Perth’s “One Airport” program, includes terminal facilities as well as aprons and taxiways, and will be led by Western Sydney International Airport designer Woods Bagot. Public comment is open until 14 January.

Perth Airport last month also released its draft 2026 master plan, which forecast annual passenger numbers to grow from 17.48 million to 30.8 million by 2046, with aircraft movements to grow from 160,800 to 222,800 per year and air freight to reach up to 269,000 tonnes.
